Like much of the campus community, international students will occasionally need support in the areas of language, writing, oral communication, research, and social and emotional well-being. 51ÁÔÆæ has a variety of resources to support students in these areas.

Academic Resources

Writing Center

The Writing Center provides individualized peer tutoring for writing in any discipline at any level. We can help with all parts of the writing process, from generating thesis statements and outlines through polishing final drafts.

Support for multilingual students (often termed ESOL, or English for Speakers of Other Languages) seeks to create an inclusive academic environment that respects linguistic variations and encourages intercultural interaction. Multilingual students who have specific questions may contact Multilingual Specialist Laura Widman at lwidman@hamilton.edu.

Oral Communication Center

The Oral Communication Center offers support for students preparing any oral communication assignment, including individual presentations, debates, oral exams, group presentations, and poster presentations. Workshops and speaking competitions provide additional opportunities for students to develop and display their speaking abilities.

Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning Center

The Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning Center offers drop-in and individual peer tutoring in introductory level courses containing a mathematics/quantitative component, as well as statistical support. Students may come to the center to work on homework, work with a tutor, review specific topics, or use the resources of the computer lab.

Library

Librarians provide expert research assistance at the Information Desk, via email, phone, and by appointment. Librarians can help you develop a research strategy for locating relevant information on your topic, find quality answers to your research questions, locate books, eBooks, and other library materials, select, evaluate, and cite authoritative information sources, and create a successful research project.

Social & Emotional Wellbeing Resources

International Friendship Program

The International Friendship Program (IFP) connects incoming students with families or individuals in the Clinton community. Generally, IFP families will meet students at an opening cookout and plan occasional activities such as a dinner in their home, trips to local attractions, or holiday gatherings. This can be an important cultural connection for international students and a source of support in the community.

Counseling Center

The Counseling Center can help with cultural adjustment, social or relationship problems, feelings of homesickness and other things that can come up for international students. Coming to the U.S. is often a huge step for students, and finding a place to share feelings and ask questions can be vitally important.

Additional Resources

Students should seek out their Community Advisors (CAs), academic advisors, ALEX advisors, and professors. CAs are upperclass students who oversee the residence halls. They can help with informational issues, roommate conflicts and the like, and are always happy to lend an ear. Academic advisors are assigned to each incoming student who should be available for consultations about matters related to classes and scheduling when needed. ALEX advisors are assigned to each incoming student and work with them throughout their four years, providing holistic advising to connect students with various resources. Professors are wonderful resources, hold regular office hours and should be available for individual appointments. This is the best way to get to know a professor, ask questions and discuss important ideas related to the subject matter.
