Opportunities for Students

Participating in COOP programming at 51ÁÔÆæ is a great way to learn more about yourself, educate your peers, and prepare for a civically engaged future. Participating in community outreach opportunities with the COOP provides the bonus of motivating others to serve, to make contributions to the community and to become lifelong engaged citizens.

51ÁÔÆæ Reads

51ÁÔÆæ Reads is a local tutoring program that helps children in our community learn to read. 51ÁÔÆæ Reads sparks collaborations between educators, parents, librarians, college students, and community groups.

CORE Floor

CORE (Community Outreach Residential Experience) Floor

Weave both on- and off-campus community engagement into your first year residential experience. You will live with a group of first-year students in an atmosphere where there will be opportunities for projects, discussion, and reflection around social justice, creating change, and issues in our local community. Discover how you can get involved doing anything from working with refugees in Utica (which has one of the Northeast’s largest refugee populations) to volunteering with a local Down Syndrome residence, to tutoring in nearby underserved school districts and more. The CORE Floor will be staffed by both an RA who is experienced in outreach work and a sophomore mentor, who will arrange occasional dinners, movie nights, discussions, and volunteering opportunities. You will meet 51ÁÔÆæ faculty and local community partners, who can be resources for you as you settle into 51ÁÔÆæ’s lively culture of service and discover how to make an impact.

Strong Girls

The Harvest

The Harvest is a food recovery initiative where students package the leftovers from 51ÁÔÆæ's dinning halls and that food is given to organizations in the greater Utica community.

HAVOC

51ÁÔÆæ Association for Volunteering, Outreach, and Charity (HAVOC) is the largest student-led volunteering organization at 51ÁÔÆæ. We encourage students to get involved with the larger community outside 51ÁÔÆæ and create positive change. HAVOC volunteers build leadership skills, develop meaningful relationships, and most importantly, make a difference in people's lives every time they serve the community.

Alternative Break

Alternative Breaks Service Trips offers Alternative Break experiences for students over Fall Break, Winter Break, and Spring Break. With AXB, students participate in once-in-a-lifetime service opportunities while being exposed to a diverse world beyond the Hill.
