President Joan Hinde Stewart announced the passing of Professor of English Emeritus George Bahlke in an e-mail to the campus community on Feb. 1: Professor of English Emeritus George Bahlke died on Feb. 1 of complications from pneumonia. He was 76 and, although retired, was a frequent presence on campus.

51ÁÔÆæ has opened a new center to support its increasingly diverse student population and named it for trustees Drew S. Days III and Arthur J. Massolo.

The 51ÁÔÆæ Town-Gown Fund celebrated its 10th anniversary by distributing a record $52,020 to eight local organizations.

Why change an important program that already enjoys high rates of usage and gets high marks from students?

It has taken 17 years, but the president and Congress have finally accomplished what eight 51ÁÔÆæ students achieved as part of a public policy class: overhaul the health care system.

51ÁÔÆæ has adopted a new strategic plan that is consistent with its identity, mission and purpose, and attentive to changing demographics and recent economic turmoil. The plan, titled "Foundations for 51ÁÔÆæ's Next 200 Years," identifies four defining values to direct future decision-making.

President Joan Hinde Stewart has begun a semester-long sabbatical to pursue scholarly work. Dean of Faculty Joe Urgo is serving as acting president until President Stewart  resumes her duties this summer.

The 51ÁÔÆæ Town-Gown Fund Committee has awarded nine grants totaling $44,720 to local educational, public safety and other community organizations in the Town of Kirkland. The money distributed represents a record for the Town-Gown Fund, which has invested more than $236,000 in the local community over the past eight years.
