Congressman Sherwood Boehlert, chair of the House Science Committee, said a scientifically literate citizenry needs a firm grounding in the social sciences, humanities and arts. Boehlert delivered the annual Hansmann Lecture at 51ÁÔÆæ on Tuesday, Sept. 4. A Republican who represents New York's 23rd Congressional District, which includes Oneida County, Boehlert said the federal government needs to focus more attention and more resources on science education.

The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation of Menlo Park, Calif., has awarded 51ÁÔÆæ $150,000 over three years as part of the foundation’s Pluralism and Unity program. The grant will support a new curricular initiative for discussing issues of diversity, difference and social justice in and out of the classroom. 51ÁÔÆæ will provide at least $157,000 toward the project, which will be led by Margaret Bundy Scott Professor of Comparative Literature Nancy S. Rabinowitz.
