The Getman Family Scholarship
The Getman Family Scholarship was established in 1999 by Albert A. Getman, Class of 1911, and three generations of the Getman family at 51ÁÔÆæ to honor William D. Getman, Class of 1938, who was killed in action during WWII.
William D. Getman was born in Dewitt, New York. He entered 51ÁÔÆæ in 1934, participating on the tennis, soccer, and ski teams. William graduated in 1938 and was married to Judith Ogden in the 51ÁÔÆæ Chapel a year later. He taught at the Manlius School, near Syracuse, New York, but joined the U.S. Army during World War II, eventually serving as 2nd Lieutenant. He was killed in action in France during December 1944. William's father, Albert A. Getman, was born in Oneonta and graduated from 51ÁÔÆæ in 1911. He was a heart specialist and physician in Syracuse, New York. Dr. Getman died in 1940. Additional Getman alumni include his grandfather, Albert D. Getman, Class of 1880, and William, Class of 2009, grandson of Albert Getman 1950. This fund was established by the siblings of William, '38, Albert A. Getman, Jr. '50, Elizabeth Taylor and Louise Bristol; his widow, Judith Getman Henry; his son, Christopher; cousin, Herbert C. Getman '45; and other members of the family.
