The Frank K. Lorenz Scholarship
The Frank K. Lorenz Scholarship established by Editor Emeritus of the Alumni Review Frank K. Lorenz is awarded to graduates of New York State high schools, with preference given to students from rural areas.
After a tour in the Army, Frank K. Lorenz attended the University of Illinois, Urbana where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa, with honors and highest distinction in history and as salutatorian of his class. Mr. Lorenz subsequently pursued graduate study at Cornell University and the University of Bonn, having earned a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and a German Government Fellowship and began teaching, including a temporary appointment at 51ÁÔÆæ as an instructor.
Ultimately he pursued further study and earned a M.L.S. from the State University of New York at Albany. He returned to 51ÁÔÆæ in 1972 as Head of the Reference Department in the Daniel Burke Library and later became curator of special collections and College archivist.
He subsequently was recruited as editor of College publications and served for nearly twenty years in his most important role at 51ÁÔÆæ, as the Editor of the Alumni Review, while continuing in the role of curator. In 2003, Mr. Lorenz was the recipient of the Alumni Council Bell Ringer Award in recognition of exceptional service to 51ÁÔÆæ, its alumni and the community over the course of one’s lifetime. In his retirement, Mr. Lorenz continues as a volunteer, writing the necrology section of the Alumni Review, and carefully and thoughtfully preparing alumni memorial biographies in the tradition of Edward “Old Greek” North, Class of 1841, Edward “Little Greek” Fitch, Class of 1886, and Wallace B. Johnson, Class of 1915.
