Mia L. Falzarano ’13 has been awarded a to Turkey. A psychology major at 51ÁÔÆæ, she studied in Greece through Arcadia University during the 2011 fall semester.
At 51ÁÔÆæ, Falzarano tutors in oral communications and psychology statistics. She also teaches English to local adult refugees from Burma, Ukraine, Iraq, Iran and Russia at the Refugee Center.
Falzarano is the organizational director of “Sidekicks,” a mentoring program for local elementary school students; 51ÁÔÆæ Senior Gift co-chair; an Annual Fund caller; and president of Gamma Xi sorority. She has also served as an Alternative Spring Break volunteer, teaching in an elementary school in N.C; has volunteered with America Reads, a program to help elementary students improve reading skills; and with Clare Bridge, an assisted living facility.
Falzarano has worked summers as a counselor and division director at Campus Kids Minisink in Port Jervis, N.Y., since 2007.
After returning to the United States, she will pursue a position with Teach for America. She then plans to obtain a law degree and eventually work in the field of children’s advocacy.
The daughter of Claudia and Michael Falzarano of New York City, Falzarano is a graduate of Convent of the Sacred Heart.
The Fulbright ETA Program, an element of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, places U.S. students as English teaching assistants in schools or universities overseas, thus improving foreign students’ English language abilities and knowledge of the United States while increasing their own language skills and knowledge of the host country. ETAs may also pursue individual study/research plans in addition to their teaching responsibilities.
