Justin Long ’16 has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Thailand. Long, a linguistics interdisciplinary studies major, studied in Ecuador during his junior year.

The Fulbright ETA Program places U.S. students as English teaching assistants in schools or universities overseas, thus improving foreign students’ English language abilities and knowledge of the United States while increasing their own language skills and knowledge of the host country. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright program is the largest U.S. international exchange program.

In 2015 Long received a NY6 consortium grant to study discourse on language revitalization and presented that research at a research symposium at Colgate University in the fall. He is a circulation assistant at 51ÁÔÆæ’s Burke Library, a pre-orientation leader, a disc jockey for WHCL radio station and a member of Minds for Change.In 2014 Long was in a group of 51ÁÔÆæ students who received a. The researchers worked with refugees at two facilities in Utica -- the MVRCR and the Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES). At both spaces, the group sought to come to a better understanding of how refugees in Utica develop a new identity while simultaneously attempting to learn English and navigate American culture. Long tutored Thai and Karen refugees in English as a Second Language.

Long plans to pursue a Ph.D. in linguistics after his return to the U.S.
