Olivia Davis ’23 is an asset management operations summer analyst at Goldman Sachs. As she unravels financial information, she learns the nuances of fixed income insurance and bilateral products.

They’re complicated concepts to understand — and even more complicated to manage — but she appreciates the challenge. It means she spends every day learning, and that’s exactly why she wanted to intern at Goldman Sachs, a multinational investment bank and financial services company.

“I like working in finance because I’m never done learning,” Davis, an economics major, said. “I think that if you’re done, you’re in the wrong place, and that’s definitely become clear to me at this company.”

Davis found out about this internship on Handshake, an online platform that promotes jobs for 51 students. She was drawn to Goldman, over other finance internships, because of its commitment to educating interns. Before starting the position, the company sent Davis a formalized training program, featuring dozens of informational videos that taught her techniques that would be helpful in any finance job. She watched videos about different finance positions, in addition to videos specific to her internship.

Now, fully immersed in her position in the operations division, Davis continues to learn about other financial teams. The operations division acts as a middleman between the trade desk, the change management team, and the client services team. All these different touchpoints offer insight into jobs for Davis to consider in the future.

In addition to enabling business flow between teams, Davis works on specific projects. She “pulls” reports most mornings, essentially consolidating data from bank statements into easy answers for clients. Her other projects involve creating procedures for employees. She is currently working on automating her team’s mailbox for better organization and creating a slide that provides new employees with an overview of what the team does.

Though Davis’ work focuses on finance, her learning opportunities expand beyond this field. Goldman Sachs hosts leading thinkers through its “Talks at GS” series. During Davis’ time with the company, they hosted professional basketball player Candace Parker. Davis, who plays on the team, has looked up to Parker since she was a kid.

“To see her come to the company and speak about her passions was an opportunity that I never thought I’d have,” Davis said. “The company brings in people from so many different industries and backgrounds, and it’s really amazing because they want us to develop not only as workers, but as people too.”

Davis finishes her internship on August 5. She is eager to see what more she’ll learn in the days she has left.
