51ÁÔÆæ is proud to recognize our seniors who have been awarded national fellowships and scholarships, many of which involve international travel. The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, which oversees the Fulbright program, has delayed the start of 2020-21 programs until after Jan. 1, 2021. This revised date assumes that travel warning levels will have been reduced by that time.

After learning about life in Malaysia from students she tutored in nearby Utica, Abby Rosovsky ’20 will head to the Southeast Asian country in January as the recipient of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship.

“A number of my students introduced me to the Malaysian culture, and I've been intrigued ever since,” said Rosovsky, who added that the country requires English as a compulsory subject.

This interested her because she spent the summer of 2018 in Kigali, Rwanda, tutoring English at a secondary school and was introduced to the idea of language-immersive learning. “I thought it was a really important practice that encouraged teachers to utilize creative methods to increase students’ abilities, and is something I could put into practice in Malaysia,” she added.

Rosovsky studied in 51ÁÔÆæ’s program in Spain in 2019. On campus, she was a senior fellow in charge of education for the Community Outreach and Opportunity Program, a student leader of the 51ÁÔÆæ Alumni Leadership Team, an executive board member for Alternative Break trips, and an Outreach Adventure program orientation leader. Last summer she was the development and external affairs intern for the Women’s Prison Association.

When her Fulbright is completed, Rosovsky plans to attend graduate school to study law, public policy, or education. “Although I'm not entirely sure what I want to do after that, I’m interested in focusing on international equality of education or something else in the public service sector,” she said.
