51ÁÔÆæ is proud to recognize our seniors who have been awarded national fellowships and scholarships, many of which involve international travel. The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, which oversees the Fulbright program, has temporarily paused travel to many countries due to COVID-19, but will reevaluate in 60 days.

Thanks to a , Mary Beringause ’20 has the opportunity to return to Argentina, where she studied and taught English in 2018.  

“While studying and teaching English to elementary school students in Buenos Aires during my junior year abroad, I felt connected to the culture and the value placed on education as well the generosity and openness of everyone I met,” said Beringause in commenting about why she decided to pursue a Fulbright to teach in Argentina. “I developed a deep appreciation for the country and a curiosity to understand its nuances, people, and their perspectives, and am looking forward to being part of a system that strengthens goodwill between the U.S. and Argentina.”

A Hispanic studies and French and Francophone studies double major, Beringause continued her interest in exploring other cultures by studying abroad last spring through the 51ÁÔÆæ in France program. Last summer she interned with the U.S. Department of State Office of Policy, Planning and Resources.

On campus, Beringause is a teaching assistant in the Hispanic Studies department and a Language Center assistant and tutor. She plays flute in the 51ÁÔÆæ Orchestra and Small Ensemble, and is copy and production editor of the student newspaper The Spectator.

Looking ahead to her time in Argentina, Beringause said, “I’m most looking forward to participating in an initiative that inspires and enables future English teachers to support their students in acquiring language and cultural literacy skills as they further their education and develop a vision for their future.”

She also hopes to help grow a community garden and join a wind ensemble in which she can play the flute and connect with more members of the community.
