World politics major Finlay Adamson ’22 will experience another country’s culture firsthand when he heads to Bulgaria as the recipient of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship.
Why did you apply to Bulgaria for the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship?

I chose Bulgaria because of my interest in European politics and history. Bulgaria is one of the oldest countries in Europe, and my placement in Burgas (on the Black Sea) provides the opportunity to learn about Thracian, Byzantine, and Ottoman history. I’m also excited by Bulgaria’s thriving speech and debate program and will use my experience gained from the 51ÁÔÆæ Debate Society to lead my school’s team.

I’m most interested in the reciprocal nature of teaching abroad. As I teach English and American history, I’ll have many opportunities to learn about Bulgarian language and culture from Bulgarian students and teachers.

How did 51ÁÔÆæ prepare or motivate you to embark on this path?

Will Andriola ’21 is a current Fulbright ETA in Bulgaria and provided me with information about what it’s like to live and teach there for 10 months. Ginny Dosch, 51ÁÔÆæ’s student fellowship coordinator, was an incredible source of support when applying for my Fulbright, and I was lucky to have the chance to work with her.
