Course Description:

Published in 1922, James Joyce’s Ulysses continues to enjoy general acclaim as the “Greatest Novel” yet written in English. To mark the centenary of this landmark literary achievement, we will undertake in this joint seminar to test the validity and utility of such a claim by reading Joyce’s encyclopaedic work in relation to its various social, historical, and cultural contexts. Particular attention will be paid to issues of colonialism, Irish nationalism, and the place of Ulysses in both the history of the novel and the history of literary criticism and theory.
