Course Description:

This course examines how the histories of modern and contemporary art are inextricably linked to the experiences that unfolded in the Atlantic Ocean. We will ask how enslavement and colonial resistance shaped major artistic movements in Europe while also configuring minoritarian identities. Special attention will be given to diasporic, indigenous, and Creole artists. Beginning in the seventeenth century and continuing into the present, we will explore ideas about visual knowledge, humanism, exchange, creolization, and hybridity.
