Julian Damashek’s teaching and research focus on aquatic ecosystem ecology, microbial ecology, and environmental genomics. Current research projects are investigating how human development and land use affect microbial communities and ecosystem functioning in lakes and rivers, with specific interests in nitrogen cycling, antimicrobial resistance, and novel archaea. This work has taken him on sampling expeditions throughout New York and along numerous reaches of the coastal Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and includes field sampling, laboratory work, and computational analysis of terabytes of environmental genomic data. Damashek  received a B.A. in biology from Amherst College, a Ph.D. in earth system science from Stanford University, and conducted postdoctoral research in marine sciences and microbiology at the University of Georgia. He previously taught in the Biology Department at Utica University.
